Suicide Risk Indicators

1. Gender

  • Males are a greater risk than females for all ages
  • Females attempt suicide more often, but males are more successful in completion of suicide

2. Age

  • Rates of suicide for children and adolescents are increasing dramatically

3. Sexual Orientation

  • Gay, lesbian, and transgender adolescents are much higher risk as compared to heterosexual adolescents

4. Other factors for higher risk of suicidal ideation

  • Isolation and/or withdrawal
  • Significant alcohol and drug use
  • Sexual assault trauma
  • Chronic physical illness
  • Significant depression
  • Hopelessness
  • Recent significant losses

5. The best single predictor of eventual suicide are people who has had prior attempts

  • About half of the people who complete suicide have made at least one previous attempt
